Now and Never

Mike Gintz Intricately composed and performed IDM, with memorable melodies and rich sound design. This EP is uniquely emotional electronic music, as Taylor's synths snake around chopped breakbeats played by his late father, and their collaboration evokes deep feelings of both mourning and hopefulness. Favorite track: Timekeeper.

about

// ABOUT THIS WORK

We are timekeepers, but we cannot keep time.

This EP arose from being caught off-guard by the impossibility of retreat from time's advance.

Our relationships are entropic, as all things; to give them coherence, they require energy, and time. Our lives unfold as a series of allocation choices, made and not made. The shortening of our projected horizon, or that of others, presents a choice: to connect, or defer. To connect requires acknowledging risk, and the wherewithal to take it.

This work arose from new avenues of connection between my own burgeoning electronic music avocation and my father's decades-long career as a professional drummer and educator. Our creative intersection—always merely nascent but never realized—was forged in the context of his failing health. This work captures the first—and only, as time would have it—real-time collaboration between the two of us: this EP will release mere weeks after his passing.

These four tracks exist as a small container for that series of nows that comprised our connection—and a nod to the innumerable nows that never were nor never will be.

// TRACK NOTES

'Wherewithal' is an ode to the choices that finally fostered our creative embrace.

'Wish I knew' conjures a sense of longing for a time-reversal: if only knowledge from the present could be injected into the past.

'Timekeeper' captures the simple profundity of making meaning of time by scaffolding it with rhythm. It is a metaphor for the musically sentimental.

'Now and never' reflects a congested, anxious pursuit of acceptance of a changed reality.

He is now cultivating his own musical persona through studio works and live performances that blend straight-ahead house and techno with more experimental and IDM-inspired sonic textures. ... more
